at 8.38am of 19th feb 2008, we lost lydia shum.we lost not only a great entertainer of all times, but also a good role model to all.
affectionately known as 'fei fei', lydia begun her acting career way back in the early 1960s and immediately grew popular due to her high spirits and great sense of humor. having acted in numerous movies, dramas and shows, she left deep impressions in all who came across her. apart from her TVB dramas and earlier years hongkong movies, she acted too when she migrated to vancover and also successfully obtained permanent residence-ship in singapore. she contributed to the local entertainment scenes in both these places, most memorable being the "living with lydia" she acted in singapore. a popular drama shown over on channel 5, received much good responses that it went on some seasons. co-workers seen her as 'big sister' of the industry, always on high spirit, ever hardworking and humble, always there for charity. she is a real good role model for all.
i believe many of us known her, at least her face and smiles, even though we may not know her name and shows. for most of us, she was a representation for a great comedian. she was natural, yet her actions and funny sense of humor brought us much laughter and smiles. for the older generations, she was like a great friend. it was like growing up with her on tv accompanied by her ever entertaining shows and acts. and for the mothers, she was a role model. she tried and she gave, all she could to make sure her daughter has the best for her future, even when she was down with all the sufferings of the illness. this was a great mother's love for her very dear daughter. my respect.
for all, her bravery and determination in fighting the illness was something to learn. she never gave up, and she gave her very best, till the very end. most importantly, she did what many of us may fail to do, she kept her smiles throughout. to smile in the midst of sufferings is never easy, she was extraordinary. her smiles raised many people's hopes for her, kept them reliefed and truly portrayed her postiveness and courage in facing the illness. truly, she was great.
here, i pay a tribute to lydia shum.we may or may not be touched by her before,she may or may not made you laugh with her gigs when she was alive,but let us all stand in salute and full respect, for this great lady, entertainer, mother of our times..thank you for all the years of laughters and tender you've brought us, and may you rest in peace in heaven.you will be remembered.
